I'm now back to my blog after one month of silence. During that month, we finally completed one room in our home. I find decorating to be a challenge. I drool when I read Dwell magazine or flip the pages of Living etc but I always get confused when I try to find my own style. A minimalist (white, modern, simplicity) or a vintage (colors, 70's furniture, kitsch decoration)? I just can't decided. I love both but I can't commit completely to one style! When decorating, is it a faux pas to follow your instinct? I came to the conclusion that I prefer to be surrounded by objects/colors/furniture that I love than by a magazine perfect room. But this is just my humble opinion! What is your best home design advice?

you did such an amazing job C! i also love the family mirror shot. i'm the same in that i have no idea what my style is and so then i just don't make a conscious decision as decorating never seems to be a priority. the fact that we live in a house too big for us allows for a minimalist sort of feel - as minimalist as a home with a child can be i suppose.
anyhow. i love your room!

Your room is lovely! I think it's important to be surrounded by things that you love rather than having a picture perfect room. My problem is eliminating the clutter. I like all different decorating styles but my fave is Asia Modern--mixing antique Asian furniture with modern European pieces.

who said, "only have things in your home that you find beautiful or useful"? well whoever it was I am trying to listen to them these days. Your room is absolutely lovely. You should just keep doing as you see fit and poo poo all those shiny magazines. And where did you get that awesome rug?!

It looks wonderful! I think you are right- it is lovely to be surrounded by things you love. I don't know what style I have. Sometimes I like really modern things, and other times I love vintage 70's stuff. They don't go well together! Your bedroom looks great, I can't wait to see what you do with the rest!

I think your room looks great! My advice is to fill your house with things that you love, need and can't live without. I love the cross stitch cushion - my fav part of this room!

A lovely room, the coat-hanger as a picture 'frame' is brilliant! Always go with what you love, I try to stick to a William Morris saying - have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.

I love reading all of this great home design advice. Not a single room in my house is "finished" (I've lived here for 10 years!) Always a work in progress...
I've missed you!!! Happy to see you again:)

I just purchased my first home (a little late at the age of 40) and am about to start on the renovation/kitchen installation, decorating and furnishing. I love Living Etc - been buying it for years to encourage me. Lets see how many styles I can create in one room! What with 1930s fireplaces and Victorian fireplaces alongside my more modern desires!
