Dreaming of wodden blocks

In my imaginary world, babies are more interested in wooden toys than in plastic junk. They realize how cool vintage and handmade is. Also, at birth, they know what mid-century modern is, love Scandinavian / Japanese design and have a clear preference for stripes shirts made in France.

Oh dear, it is so easy to get caught up in the moment. I want to do what is good for my baby. But honestly, tender loving care for my kid will go much further than the great majority of the stuff that I got for the nursery.

I'm not saying that I just turned into an extreme minimalist who will put her baby in a drawer instead of a crib (but part of me likes the concept!). On the contrary, those wooden blocks will probably be in my dreams tonight!

However, I want to spend a little less time on material stuff and more on the emotional aspect of having a kid. I want to focus on myself and on my relationship with my husband, on the beauty of being pregnant, on how my life will change forever! Suddenly, the nursery linen doesn't seem that important anymore!

I hear you, and you're right. But when your baby grows into a toddler and you are spending many hours on the carpet playing, it really does help if you find the toys appealing too.

That's why my children were so well endowed in the book department - because it was something we could both really genuinely enjoy.

But it's a certainty that your toddler will fall in love with some huge bit of injection moulded plastic with lights and hideous music. And because you love them, you will purchase one. Even if the sight of it sets your teeth on edge. Ask me how I know this...

I love the top ones with the fox and gnome and mushroom - I agree that kids like old wooden things just as much as anything else and I think it is much better than all that new plastic crap.

My dear brother-in-law makes wonderful wooden things--tables, chairs, cabinets...and when our girlie was about 6 months, he sent the handmade blocks he created for her. No letters or pictures, just a big box of beautiful wooden blocks, safely curved at the edges and non-toxically oiled. She's a teen now and won't let them out of her room.

Oh, I do love those wooden blocks. I struggle with wanting pure natural toys- when in reality I know that we will be gifted plastic crap. People mean well... but seriously- it's ugly. I will be posting more on this, if I feel that I won't offend too many family members. How has it been staying minimal? In your pictures it looks like you're winning the battle... how hard is it? By the way, I keep on looking at your simple and incredibly beautiful nursery...and jenny lind crib. I love it.
